Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations

Erik Thurman

Aquinas Hall 102

Erik Thurman was named vice president for development and alumni relations at the University of St. Thomas in June 2016. He oversees the Development and Advancement departments and their 70 staff members.

Before joining St. Thomas, he worked at the University of Minnesota in various fundraising management positions for 16 years, and in fundraising at the University of Iowa for several years before that. The large majority of his time in the development field has been in garnering support for the areas of health and medicine.

Erik was born and raised in Illinois, and he earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication from the University of Iowa, where he also got his first taste of fundraising as a student caller for the university’s foundation.

“I had a choice of two jobs as a student – to drive a campus bus or to work for the foundation’s Telefund,” he said. “The Telefund job paid 50 cents an hour more, so I took it, and I found out that I really enjoyed talking with alumni and asking them to support the university. That experience sparked my enthusiasm for working with benefactors who are passionate about helping students and advancing higher education.”

He serves on the school advisory board at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church and is the board chair of Dodoma Tanzania Health Development, a Minneapolis-based nonprofit.

Erik enjoys running and playing golf. He and his wife, Emily, have three children and live in the Highland neighborhood of St. Paul.
