St. Thomas has implemented a Center for Risk Management & Insurance to help revitalize a shrinking industry and give students access to game-changing career opportunities across multiple financial disciplines.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that over the next 15 years, 50% of the current insurance workforce will retire, leaving an estimated 400,000 open positions in the RM&I workforce unfilled over the next decade. St. Thomas is already seeing an increased interest in RM&I programs, and now is the time to capitalize on that interest — for both our students and the country. The Center for Risk Management & Insurance aims to become a national leader in the education of future RM&I professionals.
The Center offers a 12-credit certificate in RM&I programming, including core education areas of risk mitigation, insurance, benefits, financial advising, and worker’s compensation.

The Center for Risk Management & Insurance is a new program at St. Thomas — which means our donors have the opportunity to make an incredible impact on the Center’s programming and mission. Every gift counts, no matter the size. Funding for the Center will support RM&I incentive scholarships, continuation scholarships for Dougherty Family College students, faculty support and research, and expanded leadership to help guide the Center.

In 2023, UST’s student chapter of GIS, a Risk Management and Insurance club, attended the annual national GIS meeting in Baltimore, MD thanks to funding from UST club funding, student fund-raising efforts and a generous grant from the Spencer Educational Foundation.
Students engaged in a variety of professional development opportunities such as getting headshots, resume reviews and attending industry-specific job fairs.
On their Baltimore trip, RM&I students had the chance to bond with fellow students and network with other industry professionals during a night out at an Orioles baseball game. Impressed and enthused, the students returned excited about industry opportunities and leveraging resources at St. Thomas to access them.
